Diamondbacks 3, White Sox 1



A few hours after being told he had won a starting job for Arizona, Claudio Vargas took the mound in a performance that backed up the choice.

The right-hander allowed one run and two hits in six innings in the Diamondbacks' 3-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.

"I know he was happy about hearing that he was in the rotation," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said, "and he went out there and pitched like it."

Vargas, who will be the team's No. 5 starter, struck out five and walked two.
