Blue Jays-White Sox Preview

Nearly three weeks into the 2006 season, the Toronto Blue Jays will finally unveil another key piece of their offseason makeover.

A.J. Burnett makes his Blue Jays debut when they continue their three-game series Saturday against the Chicago White Sox.

"He's going to be really excited, probably throwing 100 (miles per hour)," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "Hopefully it's 100 strikes.

Blue Jays-White Sox Preview

Despite various pre-game festivities honoring their World Series win, the Chicago White Sox had a rough opening series at U.S. Cellular Field.

Now the defending champions return home to take on the Toronto Blue Jays feeling confident and more focused after a six-game road trip and four straight wins.

"All the attention before the (first series), it was nice," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "But right now, we've started to play the regular season.

Mariners 4, White Sox 3 (AP)



Seattle starter Jamie Moyer prepared for his opening day start with a near-flawless performance. With just over a week before the start of the regular season, Moyer held the defending champion Chicago White Sox to one hit in six shutout innings to lead the Mariners to a 4-3 win Friday. "I was throwing mostly fastballs and had pretty good location," Moyer said.

White Sox 4, Cubs 4



Jim Thome hit two home runs, two singles and drove in three runs Monday as the Chicago White Sox played a 4-4 tie with the Chicago Cubs.

The Cubs scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game, and the teams halted play.

Thome, Chicago's designated hitter, hit solo homers in the sixth and seventh innings, raising his spring training total to four. The White Sox had given Thome extra at-bats in recent minor league games so that he could get his stroke down.

Giants 19, White Sox 7 (AP)



The San Francisco Giants hardly ever scored runs this easily when Barry Bonds was out of the lineup last season. With Bonds sidelined by a strained left elbow, Jason Ellison hit a grand slam and Dan Ortmeier had a three-run double among the Giants' 21 hits in a 19-7 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.

Chicago White Sox Roster Report



The White Sox may have strutted into spring training, but were limping out. RHP Dustin Hermanson is facing a career-threatening back problem, while the team got a scare when RHP Jose Contreras felt soreness in his right elbow in mid-spring. The injury proved to be only a muscle pull, but he missed two starts.

Chicago White Sox Inside Pitch



What started as a long shot is all but reality, as the White Sox are prepared to break camp with 21-year-old Boone Logan on the 25-man roster. After Monday's game against the Cubs, the White Sox announced that left-hander Javier Lopez and right-hander Tim Redding were reassigned to minor league camp, bringing the roster to 26.

Diamondbacks 3, White Sox 1



A few hours after being told he had won a starting job for Arizona, Claudio Vargas took the mound in a performance that backed up the choice.

The right-hander allowed one run and two hits in six innings in the Diamondbacks' 3-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.

"I know he was happy about hearing that he was in the rotation," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said, "and he went out there and pitched like it."

Vargas, who will be the team's No. 5 starter, struck out five and walked two.

Chicago White Sox Notes, Quotes



--LHP Neal Cotts was given his first save opportunity of the spring on Monday, and he surrendered two runs and the lead in the ninth inning against the Cubs. Manager Ozzie Guillen didn't seem overly concerned, however, and said that Cotts is still the first option after closer Bobby Jenks. --DH Jim Thome continues to find his power stroke, hitting his third and fourth homers of the spring in the last two days.
